Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a hooker with a heart of gold, is hired by a lonely business shark (Richard Gere) to be his escort at social events. As the week goes on, they both become very fond of each other and begin to wonder if the "business relationship" should continue.

After a failed attempt to go shopping for designer clothes, Edward takes Vivian to a high end clothing store where he is prepared to spend an obscene amount of money on Vivian. This gets the staff moving and the hooker with the heart of gold goes on a shoppping spree, after which she stops by the store that shunned her and rubs their nose in their lost commission.
