Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) is about to retire from his long career at the CIA when his prize pupil Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is captured by the Chinese. Nathan must out-manuever his own coworkers as well as the Chinese to free his friend and student as he relates their long history together.
